How to Lose Weight and Keep it Off!

By Kristina LaRue, RDN 7 Comments

Monday morning I was asked to talk about a recent article featured in the Huffington Post on Fox35 Orlando. I totally loved the topic and was pumped that I got to talk about lasting weight loss… aka NON DIETING!

FOX 35 News Orlando

If you haven’t already figured out that diets are futile, then listen to my segment! Dieters often focus on the wrong things i.e. weight loss, restricting, cutting foods out of the plan, labeling foods good or bad… and those things don’t last! We cannot maintain that type of thinking in a healthy and happy way.

Here are my thoughts on 3 things you should ditch to lose the weight forever…

Ditch the Quick Fix: Most diets fail and people regain the weight they lost and then some. There are no magic pills to weight loss! To see lasting results, make small changes and commit to being consistent at them. Also, be realistic in your weight loss goals, most people should not lost more than 1 pound per week so don’t be swayed by the diet fads and detoxes that promise losing 10 pounds in 7 days. Losing weight too fast affects your muscle mass and metabolism… remember slow and steady wins the race!

No cheat days! This goes against what RDs preach… everything in moderation. I despise cheat days for many reasons.. first who are you cheating?? I don’t think this mentality fosters a healthy relationship with food and body image. I’ve seen people undo a whole lot of progress in one cheat meal or day, because who can eat just one piece of chocolate after refraining from it for a whole week? Instead allow yourself to have little bites of indulgence, daily.. or whatever feels right for you. No strings attached.

Don’t play the blame game. We love our excuses.. the coworker trying to sabotage by bringing in the donuts, or our parents for giving us these genes that we don’t appreciate, or our medical condition for weight gain. We each have the power to choose what we do on a daily basis and how we are going to eat. Food doesn’t choose you and neither does your schedule. Why do we overstuff ourselves with food and/or busyness? So instead of blaming yourself or someone else, start taking action and you’ll be amazed at how quickly this will build your momentum and encourage a healthy and balanced lifestyle!

I’d love to hear your thoughts, please share them below in the comments 🙂
