Sweet Home Orlando

By Kristina LaRue, RDN 4 Comments

The Friday morning alarm beeped at 3:00, and we packed the car and headed to aunt Elaine’s lake house near Auburn, AL. Not too long into the drive we made a pit stop for coffee and bfast. Mmmm, nothing like a good latte on a road trip.

Shortly after we made it to the lake, we chopped up a fresh herby salad and visited on the deck overlooking the water. The weather was overcast and breezy, a nice break from the Florida heat for sure.

While Eric took a late afternoon nap, aunt Elaine and I went outside to pick figs from her lemon fig tree. I had never tasted a fig before–they were very sweet with a soft texture. She gave me a few good fig recipes that I’m excited to try.

Aubie likes figs too.

Look what else we found, an apple tree!!

Our dinner menu included baked tilapia with mango salsa, green salad, roasted vegetables fresh from the garden, and figs with stuffed goat cheese wrapped in bacon. After a long day we were exhausted, and turned off the lights early.

Saturday morning Eric and my cousin Laney went outside with us to gather hydrangeas and those pretty apples we found hanging high in the tree tops. We had so much fun out there. Until, we were attacked by YELLOW JACKETS. Aunt Elaine, Aubie, and I were the victims to some nasty bee stings.

Inside we tried to cure our ailments with ice, homemade paste, and sipping on some earl grey that Eric made for us.

After that stressful episode we had the most invigorating run in Auburn with hill climbing and misty rain. Running on our old roads was a great way to explore the town. We were drenched after the run, but that was half the fun. Lunch was at one of our old faves, Big Blue Bagel, and then we kicked it around town for a bit. Of course we had to get some Toomer’s lemonade, too.

Good friends from college got married this weekend, and we were excited to be a part of their special day. It was a beautiful celebration, filled with lots of dancing and laughing with some awesome friends.

Fun times were had. We made it back to sweet home Orlando late last night, and can’t wait until our next visit.
