Learning to Sew

By Kristina LaRue, RDN 2 Comments

A few weeks ago, Eric needed the hems of his pants to be restitched. In the past, I’ve always taken these kinds of problems to my mother. I was afraid to attempt sewing something myself, thinking that I would probably mess it up.

That day I went to Hobby Lobby, and picked up my first needle and thread. From then, I realized this isn’t as scary as I had once thought. “What’s the worst that can happen? I rip the seam out and try again!” That message empowered me!

The next weekend, my mom and I pulled out her old sewing machine which needed some serious love. We had to take it apart and give it oil to bring it back to life—but since then it has been running smoothly. Here’s a snippet of my life lately.

Dear Mom,

Thank you for teaching me how to sew. I enjoy creating, and this sewing thing is really fun. I’m sure I get that excitement from you. You are so talented, and I am thankful to be your daughter. I love you.

Love,

Kristina
